Thievery Corporation To Work On New Album In 2010

s it winds down the cycle of its latest album, 2008's Grammy-nominated "Radio Retaliation," Thievery Corporation is planning to start the new year in the recording studio.

"We're going to start recording in January," Rob Garza, who formed and leads the collective with Eric Hilton, tells Billboard.com. "This year we kind of marked for doing a lot of touring, so 2010 we have marked down as being a studio year." And, he adds, the pan-global duo is likely to go in with a blank slate.

"That's how all our records start," Garza explains. "We always have ideas in the back of our minds, but once you start (recording) it's like some strange road trip; all of a sudden you wind up some place completely different. So there's no sense in trying to choose a direction; in the end the record kind of dictates what it's about rather than you."

Garza and Hilton, meanwhile, are happy to be giving "Radio Retaliation" a victory lap, still basking in the Grammy nod for Best Recording Package. "It's great to go out and see that the audiences were really receptive to this record and just love a lot of the songs," Garza says of the set, which includes guest appearances by Femi Kuti, Chuck Brown, Anoushka Shankar, Seu Jorge and others. "We're not a band that gets any radio airplay, and to go out and see how receptive people are and how familiar with the work they are is great. A lot of our records are slow burns; they don't hit and then are gone the next day. They build up over the course of years, sometimes. We're still kind of feeling that right now."

Among those fans this year was Paul McCartney, who tapped Thievery Corporation to open his Aug. 1 show in Landover, Md., and asked Garza and Hilton to come to the stadium the day before the concert to say hell.

"That was pretty insane," Garza recalls with a laugh. "To meet Paul McCartney was pretty wild; the people around him were like, 'Oh, he likes your music,' he wanted us to show up the day before so we could meet him, and we were pretty surprised by that. It was just, like, 'Hello...' I mean, you feel very star struck in a way, like, what do you say to one of the Beatles? 'Hey, nice day?' We just kind of shot the breeze, but that was still...surreal."

Thievery Corporation will appear live in concert this Saturday, June 23rd at Merriweather Post Pavilion, just outside of DC. We are honored to be joined for a fantastic day-long music festival by Manu Chao's first appearance in the DC area for many moons, coupled with the return Brazil's own Bebel Gilberto. THIEVERY CORPORATION BACK IN THE STUDIO!

Thievery Corporation will make their ONLY live appearance of the year this summer at a huge show with Manu Chao, Bebel Gilberto and DJ sets from Ursula 1000, Nickodemus, and Thunderball. The show is Saturday, June 23rd at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland, just outside of Washington, DC. The band will spend the rest of the year working on their new album which will be released in early 2008.

Thievery Corporation and Ocote Soul Sounds both have new 12 releases for vinyl aficionados out there. Taken from Thievery Corporation's recent remix compilation Versions, "Originality," is a dubbed out sub-heavy collaboration between Thievery Corporation and legendary reggae toaster Sister Nancy. On the flipside comes the swirling echo and reverb of "Amerimacka (Thievery Corporation Remix)," originally appearing on Thievery's album The Cosmic Game this time run through the echo chamber for a brand new dub version.

"Tamarindio," from brand new label signing Ocote Soul Sounds & Adrian Quesada combines boom-bap drum rhythms, sly funk guitars, keys, and soaring flute passages of the original track while Thievery Corporation's remix picks up the pace with a steady breakbeat groove and trademark psychedelic atmospherics. Equally stunning on the flipside is the upbeat afro-beat number "Divinorum" with a stripped down vintage re-interpretation by British brokenbeat powerhouse Quantic.

The A side sees Dutch breakbeat hooligans Kraak & Smaak transforming the slinky funk of the original "A Part in That Show" into a raucous afro-beat floor filler. On the flipside is the eastern flavored acid breakbeat roller "Bombay by Bus," not available on LP, followed up by the blissful sonic vertigo of title track "You've Been Spiked."

Thunderball

Sid Barcelona and Steve Raskin are the agents behind Thunderball. This Washington DC based duo hail from the city that has always been home to covert operations and subversive forms of music. From the rhythmic beat of Go-Go to the intensity of DC hardcore, the city's cultural diversity set the framework for Thunderball's multifaceted approach to music. Steve was a core member of DC's post-punk band Edsel and an established album designer for local indie labels Dischord, and Simple Machines.

Today the duo brings that DIY attitude to Thunderball.
"The fact that we grew up knowing that you put on your own shows, that you do it yourself, pushed us to be self-motivated. That punk ethic has made what scene there is very strong," explains Raskin in an interview with Fader Magazine (Winter 2000)
It was this shared DIY ethic along with a common interest in music and art that brought Thunderball together with Thievery Corporation. Steve worked with Eric Hilton to design albums for the young Eighteenth Street Lounge Music label, establishing a strong visual identity that continues today.
"We share a common design aesthetic and a love for '60s style and packaging," says Raskin, "which makes designing records for ESL a perfect match."
At ESL Music, Thunderball also found a close-knit group of like-minded artists with shared musical tastes, perpetually influencing and collaborating with each other, pushing the boundaries of music. In 1996, the first Thunderball tracks were released on ESL Music's Dubbed Out in DC and over subsequent months Thunderball released a string of successful 12" singles including Hijack and This Girl. In 1998, Thunderball officially signed with ESL Music as one of the label's first artists

In March of 1999, Thunderball released their first full-length album, Ambassadors of Style, to much critical acclaim in the music press.
September 18 sees the release of their newest album, Scorpio Rising.

From the soulful, 'Heart of the Hustler,' to the high noon soundtrack, 'Angela's Lament,' Thunderball once again demonstrate the depth and breadth of their production skills.
"We wanted this record to capture the essence of early '70s cinema sound, live music that is very soulful, funk driven, with beautiful underlying orchestral arrangements," says Barcelona.
Thunderball brought several friends and family into the studio to add to this vision. Miss Johnna M. (This Girl/Sirocco) was called on once again to add her sultry vocals to the mix. Rob Myers, (Sitar on Thievery Corporation's Lebanese Blonde), was brought in from the live Thunderball set to play guitar and sitar. In addition Thunderball enlisted the expertise of DC compatriots Kevin Cordt (trumpets), Steven Albert and Nick Pellicciotto (percussion and drums), DJ Niv (turntables), and new vocalists Mustafa and Akil, to flow on the album.
Scorpio Rising is the culmination of Thunderball's original concept to bring an organic groove laden sensibility to modern electronic music production. No attention to detail was spared.
Thunderball is currently focusing on the new live setup and will tour both as DJ's and as the band in the late summer and early fall. Keep an eye out for more Thunderball singles and remixes, including 'Vai Vai,' a new Drum and Bossa track to be released in the next few months.

Thievery Corporation has stepped forward to headline Operation Ceasefire, potentially the largest anti-war concert ever held in Washington, DC. This FREE concert is on September 24th, immediately after the massive march on Washington, DC., organized to demand the return of American troops from Iraq .
